How to Measure Windows for Blinds & Shades
1、Determine the Type of Installation
First, decide whether you want an inside mount (installed within the window frame) or an outside mount (installed outside the window frame). The measuring methods vary slightly depending on the installation type.
2、Measuring for Inside-Mount Blinds
This applies when the blinds will be installed inside the window frame.
Measure the Width: Use a tape measure to measure the width inside the window frame at the top, middle, and bottom. Record the smallest measurement as the width of the blinds.
Measure the Height: Measure the height inside the window frame on the left, center, and right sides. Record the largest measurement as the height of the blinds.
Check Depth Requirements: Ensure the window frame is deep enough to accommodate the blinds. Most blinds require a specific depth for proper installation, so check the product’s depth requirements.
3、Measuring for Outside-Mount Blinds
This applies when the blinds will be installed outside the window frame.
Measure the Width: Measure the actual width of the window and add 3-6 cm (1.5-3 inches) on both sides for overlap to ensure the blinds will fully cover the window.
Measure the Height: Measure the actual height of the window and add 6-10 cm (2.5-4 inches) to the top and bottom for sufficient coverage.
4、Other Measurement Considerations
When using a tape measure, ensure it is held straight and tight against the window frame or wall for accuracy.
Check if the window has any irregular shapes or slopes. If so, an outside mount may provide better coverage.
5、Double-Check Your Measurements
After completing your measurements, double-check them to ensure accuracy. Different manufacturers may have specific size requirements, so it’s always a good idea to verify installation recommendations before purchasing.
By following these steps, you can accurately measure for your blinds, ensuring a perfect fit for installation.
